Tennova Healthcare - Turkey Creek Medical Center Participates in DISRUPT PAD III Clinical Trials with Dr. Foster as Principal Investigator
6/14/2022
Tennova Healthcare - Turkey Creek Medical Center works diligently to stay ahead of the curve with technology and actively supports clinical studies with over 25 trials enrolling at any given time. Our Director of Cardiovascular Research, Dr. Malcolm Foster was the principal investigator in the assessment of the safety and effectiveness of Shockwave Medical, Inc.’s intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) for the treatment of severely calcified atherosclerotic plaques. The study goal is to avoid unplanned stent implantations and preserve future treatment options should reintervention become necessary. The study included 306 patients who were randomly treated with either IVL or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) at 45 sites in the United States, Germany, Austria, and New Zealand. We are now at the 2-year mark and can share long-term data from this study.
Malcolm T. Foster III, MD, FACC is a Principal Investigator of DISRUPT PAD III at Tennova Healthcare - Turkey Creek Medical Center and specializes in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine and interventional cardiology. After 2 years of collecting data from multiple clinical research spaces across the globe, DISRUPT PAD III has found that vessel preparation with IVL led to positive long-term outcomes out to 2 years, with preservation of future treatment options, compared to PTA in the treatment of calcified peripheral artery disease (“Shockwave Medical's IVL Compared to PTA in DISRUPT PAD III at 2 Years”).
“We are pleased to be part of a clinical trial that will provide treatment guidance for this challenge,” commented Dr. Foster. “IVL is proving to be an excellent vessel preparation strategy with fewer complications and promises to be a preferred vessel strategy for calcified femoropopliteal disease in the future.”
