Tennova Heart Introduces Innovative Implant Therapy for Heart Failure Patients
9/16/2024
[Knoxville, TN - September 16, 2024] – Tennova Heart, a provider of advanced cardiac care in East Tennessee, announces the successful implementation of a new implant therapy for heart failure patients. This minimally invasive procedure, now available at Tennova Heart, represents a notable development in the treatment of heart failure.
Freddie Stokely, a long-time patient of Tennova Heart, recently underwent the implant procedure under the care of his cardiology provider, Stephen Miller, DNP, ACNP-BC, MSN, APN. Stokely’s journey with heart issues began nearly five years ago when he was first referred to Tennova Heart after experiencing congestive heart failure. Since then, he has undergone various treatments, including the implantation of a pacemaker and defibrillator. Despite optimal medical and device therapies, Stokely faced persistent symptoms of heart failure this year, necessitating additional treatment.
This therapy involves implanting a small device that stimulates the body’s baroreceptors to help regulate blood pressure and enhance heart function. Clinical trials have shown that this therapy can reduce heart failure symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life and functional status.
Dr. Stephen Miller, director of heart failure for Tennova Heart, noted the benefits of the new therapy. “We are pleased to offer this implant therapy to our patients. It represents a significant development in cardiac care and aligns with our commitment to providing advanced therapies. We are also fortunate to have East Tennessee Cardiovascular Research, under the direction of Dr. Malcolm Foster, which supports our ability to offer innovative heart failure treatments,” said Dr. Miller.
Stokely, who has been under the care of Dr. Miller and Dr. Foster since his initial diagnosis, expressed gratitude for the support and dedication of the medical team. “I trust Dr. Miller and Dr. Foster, along with their team with my heart,” Stokely stated. “Their commitment to my care has been exceptional, and I feel fortunate to have such a dedicated team.”
Tennova’s heart failure program and cardiovascular research program highlight its commitment to advanced patient care and position Tennova Heart as a center for cardiac treatments in the region.
